Reps. Russ Fairchild (R-Snyder/Union) and Merle Phillips (R-Northumberland/Snyder) would like to remind motorists it is illegal to drive without headlights on when their windshield wipers are in use.

Act 159 of 2006 states that headlights must be used anytime wipers are in continuous or intermittent use due to weather conditions. This not only helps increase visibility but ensures that a vehicle is more easily seen by other drivers, even in the most rainy or overcast conditions.

Failure to obey this law could result in a base fine of $25. Court costs and other attached fees could mean a fine of nearly $100 or more for the infraction.

State law also requires the use of headlights between sunset and sunrise and when the operator of a vehicle cannot distinguish a person or vehicle on a highway from a distance of 1,000 feet as a result of weather conditions including rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog, smoke or smog.
