The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is offering rebates to Pennsylvanians who have recently purchased or leased a hybrid electric vehicle, Reps. Merle Phillips (R-Northumberland/Snyder) and Russ Fairchild (R-Snyder/Union) said today.

Pennsylvania’s Hybrid Electric Vehicle Rebate Program offers a $500 rebate while funds are available for vehicles that have a combined EPA city and highway rating of greater than 55 miles per gallon, with a carbon footprint of fewer than seven tons per year of carbon dioxide. Flexible fuel and diesel vehicles are not eligible for rebates.

The rebate program is scheduled to end March 6. Rebates provide assistance with the incremental costs of buying or leasing a new, approved hybrid electric vehicle. Applications will be accepted for up to six months after the date of purchase.

The program was established by the DEP in 2004 to promote the use of alternative fuels, improve environmental quality and reduce reliance on foreign energy sources. To date, approximately 9,000 rebates have been issued to help Pennsylvanians acquire new hybrid electric vehicles.
